The Garden

ENGLISH COACHING CENTER Based on JAC BSEB CBSE ICSE SKMU and TMBU The Garden “ The Garden” is a poem crafted by Andrew Marvell, and in recent times is reputed to be his third most examined poem (Wheeler 163). As far as the construction of the poem is concerned, it has nine stanzas of iambic tetrameter couplets (Wheeler 20).   “The Garden.” In short the themes are the praise of solitude, the virtues of writing, and the speaker’s progression of outlook from physical to spiritual. One of the first that presents itself is the belief that solitude is ideal. The poem even states explicitly: “Society is all but rude,/To this delicious solitude.” (line 16) As for why the speaker seems to think that this is so, by examining the beginning of the poem it is clear that the speaker is disillusioned with the activities of mankind. As Wheeler stated when he also noted this theme, the “crowns” that are mentioned in the first stanza could be symbolic of humans rewarding others for ...

Character of Belinda

ENGLISH COACHING CENTER Based on JAC BSEB CBSE ICSE SKMU and TMBU Character sketch of Belinda The protagonist of the poem, Belinda is a wealthy and beautiful young woman who travels to Hampton Court for a day of socializing and leisure. Her remarkable beauty attracts the attention of the  Baron , who snips off a  lock  of her hair in his infatuation. At the beginning of the narrative,  Ariel  explains to Belinda through the medium of a dream that as she is a both beautiful and a virgin, it is his task to watch over her and protect her virtue—though as the poem unfolds, it’s unclear if Belinda is really as virtuous as she seems. Despite the fact that Belinda is Pope’s protagonist, she’s actually a bit of a slippery character to come to terms with, as the reader is provided with relatively little access to her inner thoughts, and her actions are often governed by supernatural forces. For instance, it is unclear how much influence Ariel, a  sylp...

Rape of the lock

ENGLISH COACHING CENTER Based on JAC BSEB CBSE ICSE SKMU and TMBU Rape of the Lock The Rape of the Lock  is a humorous indictment of the vanities and idleness of  18 th-century high society. Basing his poem on a real incident among families of his acquaintance, Pope intended his verses to cool hot tempers and to encourage his friends to laugh at their own folly. The poem is perhaps the most outstanding example in the English language of the genre of mock-epic. The epic had long been considered one of the most serious of literary forms; it had been applied, in the classical period, to the lofty subject matter of love and war, and, more recently, by Milton, to the intricacies of the Christian faith. The strategy of Pope’s mock-epic is not to mock the form itself, but to mock his society in its very failure to rise to epic standards, exposing its pettiness by casting it against the grandeur of the traditional epic subjects and the bravery and fortitude of epic he...
